Radio Club, the brainchild of Peter Bergman of FIRESIGN THEATRE and KFWB fame, has taken LA County grammar schools by storm. With a mandate to "Help Kids Find Their Voice" whether or not a community has funding, the course is designed as fun, after school enrichment primarily for 4th and 5th graders. Radio Club teaches kids literacy, teamwork, public speaking and how to express themselves through storytelling. The ten-week session culminates in a radio show written and performed by the kids complete with sound effects and a DVD to take home to the family. Radio Club has brought it's unique mix of improvisational games and writing skills to Pacoima, South LA, Hancock Park, West Hollywood, Los Feliz and East Los Angeles. The teaching staff of industry professionals and educational innovators includes Tony Abatamarco, Peter Bergman,Molly Brandenburg, Phyllis Katz, Gerald Rivers and Mark Steen. "We want kids all over LA, shy kids, new kids from wherever, to gain confidence, to be able to present themselves well in any situation, " says Bergman, a Yale graduate and producer of shows on XM as well as NPR radio. " Kids need to learn how to stand up in class, how to make a presentation, organize their thoughts and write them down. Not every kid is an actor, but every kid has something to say, something to give. I'm talking about future news writers, journalists, politicians, businessmen and women. Success means having the skills and the confidence to communicate ideas." |
